OPTIMA PROVIDES QUALITY FINISH AT £28M ABERDEEN SPORTS VILLAGE

For the state of the art £28 million Aberdeen Sports Village, architects required a solution that would provide sound proof divisions between the different sports facilities, whilst maintaining the bright, open aesthetic and providing suitable viewing areas. Optima, the UK’s market leader in the design, development and installation of glass partitioning, demonstrated that their systems would tick all of the boxes.

A training venue for London 2012 Olympic Games, Aberdeen Sports Village is the realisation of a vision first discussed in 2003 by funding partners the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and Sport Scotland. A major boost for sports and leisure in the region it provides facilities for indoor football, hockey, athletics, and a large multi-purpose games hall for badminton, judo, basketball, squash, volleyball, dance and movement, fitness and netball. Located on the site of the existing Chris Anderson Stadium, the regional sports centre is the first phase in the Aberdeen Sports Village development. Designed by architects Reiach and Hall and built by Barr Construction, Optima’s Scotland-based installer, North Offshore Ltd was chosen to supply and fit out the internal partitioning systems – with acoustic performance and a clean, bright appearance essential. Optima provided a series of its market leading glass partitioning, including its Revolution 97 single glazed with vertical dry joints and Optima 117 with 15mm glass, which was fitted with Optima’s revolutionary Nebula Dry Joints. A mullion free system, Revolution 97 was installed along the corridor overlooking the squash and badminton courts. Offering discreet aluminium dry joints to sit flush with doors and drywall creating a seamless finish, it has been designed with easy installation in mind. With its dry fix system, as well as being quickly installed, it can be easily moved and reused in the future if required.

Optima 117 single glazed partitioning system was used to stunning effect, providing clean, appealing spaces that perfectly complemented the building’s design. Installed in the gymnasium overlooking the indoor running track, the frameless appearance of Optima 117 creates an illusion of unsupported glass whilst still offering excellent acoustic performance. To provide a seamless joint system in keeping with the building’s aesthetics, North Offshore suggested the use of Optima’s Nebula Dry Joints. Each virtually invisible and translucent tubular joint is made from clear extruded plastic and is only 5mm in diameter. This allows the joints to hold the panels whilst creating just a minimal 1.5mm visible glass joint, with no silicone or tape required. Now complete, the Sports Village welcomes its visitors to a vibrant, open and welcoming environment that will ensure it remains a shining example of contemporary construction and modern sports facilities for many years to come. Clark Door Design and Manufacture Special Purpose Doors for Aberdeen Sports Village

Clark Door Limited as Fire Rated Steel Swing/Hinged Doors and Pivot Doors

Aberdeen Sports Facility is a £28Million project providing Aberdeen with first class athletics facilities both outdoor and indoor, a sports hall, gymnasium and a full-sized indoor football pitch.

Clark Door worked with the architect and main build contractor to provide 25 specialist fire rated doors. The design brief was to manufacture and install steel hinged doors varying in width and height with 60 minute fire integrity and acoustic sound insulation of Rw45db.

The unequal double-leaf floor spring pivot doors enabled the architect to make best use of the space available. This is achieved by the high strength of the floor springs enabling them to cope with the large bending moment of a very wide fire door leaf. Encompassed into the wall these fire doors are barely noticeable to the passer by allowing maximum space and light in the corridor by providing maximum clear opening height and width. In the event of a fire the magnetic catches, hidden in the recessed wall, are wired to the fire alarm system to ensure the door closes at the appropriate time. The design of the door mechanism is balanced to ensure a smooth action of manual closing.
