Essex Crossing Mixed-Use Development Project

The Essex Crossing Mixed-Use Development is a new vision for the former Seward Park Urban Renewal Area, a site where the existing community was displaced as a result of the urban renewal plans of the 1960s, which was left undeveloped and contested for decades. This underutilized area will become the heart of the community, repairing a historic gash in the fabric of the neighborhood and showcasing the community’s vision for integrating mixed-use development, affordable housing, local employment, open space, and pedestrian activity.   Caption To shape an urban design vision for the 6-acre redevelopment, BBB facilitated a community-driven process on behalf of Community Board 3 and the New York City Economic Development Corpora... Walled Garden House

We are delighted to have obtained planning permission for a residential development in the Leicestershire countryside.  Architectural designs provide a contemporary response to a sensitive historic setting in the vicinity of two Grade I listed buildings.  The eighth architects to have put forward proposals to the local planning authority, Woldon Architects design was developed via successful consultation with Historic England.  Where three poorly constructed estate cottages currently exist, a large house with underground parking and a cottage will sit comfortably in the setting of a highly attractive sloping walled garden with views over historic parkland. THE MOHONK PRESERVE

The Trapps Gateway Center, on the Mohonk Preserve, is an Orientation and Administration Center for New York State’s largest member-supported nature preserve. In 1998, the Visitor Center and its exhibits were designed by SKOLNICK. The building design has won wide recognition for its sustainable design. To celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2013, the Preserve launched several initiatives to enhance the way it engages the public with nature. To achieve this objective, the services of SKOLNICK were retained once again to develop an Interpretive Master Plan identifying a variety of enhancements and upgrades to the existing Visitor Center, as well as to the surrounding grounds. These enhancements included a 3,200 sf expansion of the Center t... More

Aileron

The Aileron Campus is the physical manifestation of a mission: to create an environment for owners of private enterprise to study professional management. Aileron reached out to SKOLNICK to create a unique place, envisioned as a retreat where entrepreneurs and business leaders can escape the everyday challenges of running a venture, focus on big picture thinking, and interface with their peers.   Collaboration with Aileron’s founders and stakeholders led to the formulation of key themes that characterize the concept of entrepreneur. These themes served to inform every aspect of the design process.   A rural setting on a former farm enhances the visitor’s sense of being removed from everyday challenges. Open views,... More

Tivoli Hjørnet

The enduring beauty of Tivoli Gardens, now 174 years in the making, lies in its gentle foundational idea, to be a recreational fantasy park serving a substantial and active city. With the completion of the Hjørnet project, it has been our privilege to engage with this extraordinary place and to be included in the latest chapter of its storied history. The original character of Tivoli as a place of amusement, culture and recreation has been sustained by a commitment to constant change and self-renewal. Janus-like, it looks to both the past and the future. It is our hope that the new building, placed in this historic setting, will gracefully anticipate and accept the overlays that will inevitably accrue with time. The key architectural idea for... More

Grand Louvre Modernization

The historic Louvre was constructed as a royal palace and was fundamentally ill-suited to serve as a museum. The challenge was to modernize and expand the building and better integrate it with the city, all without compromising the integrity of the historic structure. The two-phase solution involved reorganizing the long, linear building into a compact U-shaped museum around a focal courtyard.A centrally located glass pyramid forms the new main entrance and provides direct access to galleries in each of the museum’s three wings. The pyramid’s distinctly modern articulation complements the historic Louvre in a dialogue of harmonious contrast.SITE: 9 hectares, including areas within and below the existing museumCOMPONENTS: 62,000 m2&... CITYLIFT

What to do with Cape Town’s incomplete Foreshore Freeway Bridge is an issue that has puzzled the city (and its citizens) for decades: to complete or demolish, and how to develop a solution that will create long-term value for the surrounding precinct and the city in general. To answer this conundrum dhk, in a 10-company partnership including Urban-Think Tank, developed CITYLIFT - an innovative master plan that proposes dropping Cape Town’s elevated freeways to the ground and lifting the city over them. This scheme would expand the CBD and provide a new neighbourhood stretching 1 kilometre along the harbour’s edge. CITYLIFT was one of six shortlisted bids in a competition initiated by the City of Cape Town[1]. The brief... More
