Take the ageing premises of an “old forge” and combine it with the requirements of a modern and atmospheric office building. Voilà: we are virtually starting from scratch. The aim was to create a headquarters for a family office - a lively, flexible place to work and meet. For different companies, requirements and fields of activity. A place that nevertheless or precisely because of this (!) connects and creates identity. DIA has renovated and converted the former Auerhahn brewery in Schlitz near Fulda (Hessen), giving it a new lease of life. The listed overall site with a floor space of 800 square metres is a testimony to past industrial architecture and had not been in use since 1998. The cultural centre that has been created offers a flexibly usable events hall on the ground floor, an exhibition space in the vaulted cellar and room for a tourism office and municipal marketing. The main idea of the project became that assumption, that the building of the  National Library building, while retaining all its previous advantages and modernist character become more intuitive, ergonomic and ecological. It was decided to give the interiors of the reading rooms a new, proper hierarchy and, through the natural materials used, to emphasize their rank. The National Library building was designed in the 1960s by architect Stanislaw Fijalkowski and his team. This summer the Amsterdam UMC opened the first units in the newly renovated towers of patient rooms on the AMC site. The renovation of the towers is the most radical change since the monumental concrete hospital opened in 1983. The original design by Dick van Mourik and Marius Duintjer has been left as intact as possible in the process.
