Natural stone cladding

On an almost flat plot, we designed a villa for the client and his family, with one of their main requests being ample natural light and a seamless connection between the ground floor and the outdoor amenities. The shape of the villa is conceived as a massive rectangular block, wrapped in a band made up of walls and slabs. This band forms an envelope around the villa's core, serving multiple functions: creating terraces, overhanging roof sections for protection against overheating and rainfall, and brise-soleils to shield from direct sunlight. Mike Edwards Architecture were commissioned for a full architectural service for this project. This two storey, 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom home has generous sized rooms including a large upper floor retreat and terrace with views to Perth city skyline to the north. The north facing yard includes a retained existing swimming pool, lawn area and landscaping. A large modern open plan kitchen, living, dining area opens on to a covered patio. The second Drekka cafe and shop in Sofia opened in late 2020 in the middle of times of chaos and global pandemic. Situated in the historic center of the city, on a quiet street, it is a conversion of an old cigars shop lined with its heavy leather coverings and walnut wall panels. The design transforms the space into a bright and colorful street pocket that opens to the pedestrian traffic with its sliding folding facade system. The Drekka cyan is the focal point of a color palette full of bespoke details in pale pink (the shelving), marble (the community table) and cement (the counter). This expansive residential home in Camps Bay fulfils a brief for a large family house to be split over 4 levels, each serving a unique function as per the clients request. The design consists of a combination of vertical and horizontal elements with 2 ‘floating’ roofs above. The main vertical element is the tiled feature wall which creates a buffer to the dominant Southeaster wind as well as privacy to the next-door neighbor. The feature wall is disconnected from the rest of the house by a 2 storey high window and skylight. The project was realized on an extensive plot of land full of old olive trees near the little town of Arco, which is not far from the northern shore of Lake Garda. The entire region is world-famous for its Mediterranean microclimate and the excellent olive oil produced here.  It is therefore not surprising that the owner’s initial idea was to construct his own oil press – “frantoio” in Italian – in the middle of the olive grove.
