Piraeus Tower

Originally completed in 1975 but left largely unoccupied for decades, Piraeus Tower stood as a symbol of unfinished ambition at the port of Piraeus. Rising 88 meters, the building's concrete shell was long known as the "sleeping giant" of the port. Its recent transformation into a contemporary mixed-use tower marks a major shift in both architectural and urban terms. Led by PILA, the project reactivates the structure through a comprehensive facade retrofit and reprogramming of common spaces, aligning it with the broader regeneration of Piraeus as a dynamic, livable district. Yiannis Hadjiaslanis   Responsive facade and solar performance At the heart of the retrofit is a new facade system designed to reduce energy use and enhanc... More

The Forest by Sanjay Puri Architects “replicates a dense tree”

“The Forest” is a high-density office project that is currently in development in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Designed by Mumbai-based Sanjay Puri Architects, the project’s form — a vertical tower — responds to existing rules that govern construction in built-up areas: the ratio of permissible built-up area is nine times the plot area. SANJAY PURI ARCHITECTS The 93-meter-tall (approx. 305 feet) tower includes a double-height entrance lobby and coffee shop, community space, and rooftop terrace, in addition to a range of office spaces. The tower’s vertical circulation core sits on its southern side — this works to mitigate heat gain while at the same time... More

800 Fulton embodies SOM’s legacy of structurally expressive architecture

The 19-story mixed use building is defined by external steel brace frames. The x-braced facade marks the entrance along the west elevation. They are engineered by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with Chicago’s harsh winters in mind, to withstand 9 inches of thermal movement and resist heavy wind loads. Dave Burk The building sits in a transition zone between the low-scale Fulton Market Street and the higher-density commercial district. The volume bridges the two different scales by rising from a 3-story podium in stepped terraces towards the commercial towers. Dave Burk A series of setbacks form landscaped terraces with native plants and trees on every other floor. On the 18th and 19th floor workers can enjoy panoramic cit... More

Jing'an Ronghui Plaza

Jing’an Ronghui Plaza consists of two towers, one high-end residential buildings and serviced apartments. The programme is distributed within four individual volumes. The residential and office towers - linked by a ground floor retail layer - are placed across the site to optimise sun orientation and reduce the casting of shadows on the plot, while simultaneously reducing impact on the surrounding buildings. The horizontal ribbons that wrap around balconies and facade openings and the vertical shifts in the ribbons towards the main street which add a vertical articulation to the buildings and ground them on the site. Large glass openings a... More
