W.K.K. - Standing for steel

On an industrial site in Utrecht called De Uithof a new building (6000 m3) appeared, to increase the capacity next to two existing power stations. The size and construction of the building are largely determined by the technical requirements. The building is completely covered in order to keep noise pollution to a minimum. A skin of steel is folded over the machinery and the giant filters and dampers. Its striking form is emphasized by the self-supporting steel skin and gives the building a sculptural role in the landscape. More

Kastrup Peak Load Station(KLC2)

On the premises of Copenhagen Airport in Kastrup, Gottlieb Paludan Architects have designed a peak load station shaped like an overgrown hill. The technical functions of the small heating plant are wrapped in a soft green surface, interrupted by a vertical cut towards west. Here passers-by and even airplane passengers are able to take a look into the interior of the hill and get a glimpse of the technical equipment inside. The structure is designed to blend into the large-scale structured surroundings by means of simple and accurate, yet original design solutions. Kastrup Peak-Load Station has been designed by people mindful of the fact that each day, thousands of airline passengers will catch a glimpse of the building from above. That... More

Eco Zathe combined heat and power plant

The form of the combined heat and power plant(CHP), the materials used, the detailing and the siting in the landscapegive Eco Zathe an integrated appearance. The Eco Zathe combined heat and power plant supplies some 9,988 homes in theneighbourhoods of Techum and Jabikswoude in De Zuidlanden district with electricity and heat. It is a classic exampleof “neighbourhoodenergy”: utilising sources in the immediate surroundingsto generate energy for local use. Waste Treatment Facility

The Waste Treatment Facility (CTRV, in Spanish) is located on a hillside overlooking the Coll Cardús massif in the municipality of Vacarisses, in the district of the Vallès Occidental. This site is currently taken up by a controlled waste landfill site nearing its capacity limit. This fact has caused its managing body to consider regulating the closure of the facility and to study possible future uses for the area. The choice of the location of the CTRV has also taken into account different criteria of logistical and economic suitability, as well as the minimization of the environmental impact resulting from the installation and operation of waste management-related activities. The activity of the landfill site has led to unfriendly t... More

Artistic amenity

This power station is an instrument of education: designed to develop a sensibility for the consumption of energy and sustainable cohabitation. Combined heat and power plants are usually neutral industrial structures that are situated at some inconspicuous location. By contrast, the Stadshaard (literally the ‘city hearth’) stands at a prominent spot in Roombeek, where a neutral building would be out of place. With the Stadshaard’s dimensions (a building 10 metres high with a 40-metre chimney) it would, moreover, be impossible to realize an ‘invisible’ building that merges with the surroundings. The Stadshaard is a gateway building for the district of Roombeek, an eye-stopper and a point of refer-ence. Its basic form is simple, while its... More

Power Station Schilling

When wood burns certain natural cycles are naturally completed: chemical energy turns into light and heat, water turns into steam and then rain, mineral salts transform into ashes and fall back down to the ground and carbon dioxide is given off into the air. But when wood burns properly, all this turns into energy which may be used creating less environmental impact than any fossil fuel (either oil or gas). It may seem strange, but burning wood and safeguarding nature are perfectly compatible. This is the underlying philosophy of Schilling Power Station, which, together with the nearby sawmill, turn the woodburning cycle into something genuinely virtuous: waste products from the sawmill in the form of bark and wood chips become combustib... Biomass Heating Facility

Signifying Hotchkiss School’s commitment to becoming carbon-neutral, this facility is a living classroom for students that burns sustainably-harvested woodchips to heat the campus. Its undulating green roof blends into its surroundings while standing out as an iconic landmark.Centerbrook designed this Central Heating Facility to heat all 1.2 million square feet of the 85 buildings that comprise the campus. It burns woodchips and replaces an oil-fired boiler plant, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by a third to nearly a half. The building houses two biomass boilers. Four truck bays feed wood chips into a 17,500-cubic-foot storage bin capable of supplying a week’s worth of fuel. Two Messersmith boilers operate at 80 percent efficiency and gen... More

Celje Power Plant

The Building is a part of Celje's anti-flooding infrastructure. In it two electric generators for water pumps are based. The generators' height was exceeding the maximum height allowed in the area. That is the reason for the roof's characteristic shape: it is adjusted to the form of generators to make the building as low as possible. The image of the industrial building is therefore a mere reflection of the technology situated inside. Due to the fact that the building stands in a natural environment of Savinja river, an additional metal net skin was added, once to be overgrown with green. More

Gas Receiving Station (GOS)

The world's first biobased facade has been realized in Dinteloord, The Netherlands. Commissioned by the Tuinbouwontwikkelingsmaatschappij architect Marco Vermeulen designed the new gas receiving station (GOS) of the Agro & Food Cluster (AFC) New Prinsenland. The station is cladded with biobased panels made of Nabasco , a composite of bio resin and hemp fiber produced by NPSP Composites in Haarlem. Not only fossil fuels but also fossil raw materials become scarcer. The petrochemical industry is therefore eagerly looking for organic materials that can eventually replace oil based materials. Out of these organic materials bi based products can be made such as paints and plastics. This development is still in its early days, but will be sign... More

Øvre Forsland and Bjørnstokk Power Stations

Background The client, HelgelandsKraft AS, is a large producer of hydraulic electricity in northern parts of Norway. In 2008 they started planning several new hydraulic power stations with high environmental ambitions. From the beginning their task for the architect was to find the best way to make their new power stations adapt to the site, and at the same time function as attractions and destinations. The general idea from the architects at stein hamre arkitektkontor, is the design of the new stations should reflect characteristics of the locations. At the same time the buildings should be spectacular. They should also tell the story about the production of power. The Power Stations Bjørnstokk and Øvre Forsland are medium size... More

Olympic Energy Centres

John McAslan + Partners has completed the Cofely Energy Centres for the 2012 London Olympics which presents power generation as a new kind of presence in two east London communities. The Energy Centres will be technically advanced, environmentally considerate, and be embedded in the community rather than hidden from it. The design of the Energy Centres at King’s Yard and Stratford City responds strongly to a primary contextual issue. Both sites are in significant ‘gateway’ positions. The Stratford City Energy Centre is clearly seen from Stratford town centre and housing estates east of the Olympic site; and the King’s Yard Energy Centre dominates views from Victoria Park, Hackney Wick and parts of Bow. The Energy Centres are important... More

Punibach hydroelectric power station

The Punibach hydroelectric power station is conceived as a fracture in the landscape. Harmonically integrated in its surroundings, it suddently brakes it open and reveals the machines in its interiors, which serve to transform natural powers into useful energy. The concrete slab rammed into the ground separates the smooth hilly landscape and the raw building structure made out of natural, earth coloured materials. By night the appearance changes radically. Whilst the landscape disappears in the darkness, the power station glows through the lamellar façade and presents itself as a landmark to the viewers over the road. Similarly to the preceding Winnebach project, also Punibach hydroelectric power station is located in a very delica... More

Boiler building II

A simple box rises up from the ground, angled to face the sun. This second Boiler is a development of ideas that came up working with the first one in 2008. Continued use of mesh fence, this time as the outer layers of the facade. Getting closer you feel the textile character underlined by the buttons keeping the distance from the basic facade. All technologies have been compressed and moved indoors.
The roof of solar cells is responsible for all the energy necessary to run the plant, except for pellets and ever "padding" with oil. More

Hydroelectric power station

The hydroelectric power station is located near Winnebach brook in Dörfl (municipal territory of Vintl), at 800 m. above sea level. It's partly built into the slope, since the building area was extremely reduced. The project consists in a simple but polygonal volume, which is formally adapted to the landscape and the local conditions. The station is conceived as an artificial rock quarried out of the slope. This sensation is underlined by a very reduced use of materials (concrete, glass and steel) in their rougher form, as well as by the "veins" which cross the volume. These "veins" consist of light bands of layered glass and run around the building. At some specific points of those light bands a normal single glass delivers insight to the... More
