S+AT Residence

Once upon a time the streets of Bangalore were quaint, warm and had a familiarity passed on from generations.  As the city grew to become a global Information Technology center the vernacular fabric of our streets rapidly depleted as the old made way for the new. The renovation and extension of the 40 year old house with a floor added on the top was designed to mark its own identity from the outside but also as a solution to add the new to the old without radically transforming the house from the way it has visually responded to the street for many decades.  The vernacular builds a context which lends definition to our streets and our lived eco system.  Anand Jaju Anand Jaju Anand Jaju Anand Jaju Anand... Chelsea Hill House

Clearly delineating space for a single mother and her teenagers was a primary consideration for this relatively small home. Spaces had to be segregated without feeling choppy, while also maintaining an open, airy environment. Photolux Studio/Christian Lalonde Overlooking a beautiful river valley, the house was conceived as a simple masonry volume with the ground floor being dedicated exclusively to the teenagers with bedrooms, TV area and sports equipment storage. The second storey features all of the common living spaces, as well as the master bedroom and bathroom. The 2 levels are joined by the double-height entryway and hallway below, creating the illusion of the primary living level floating above the serene vista beyond. Photo... More

PH Helguera

The challenge was to completely transform the old "ph", which functioned as a carpentry shop. Modify the original structure (dark rooms) with spaces full of light that open onto a large void, a longitudinal patio with a contemporary and welcoming imprint. Bruto Studio Bruto Studio Bruto Studio In this sense, the Helguera "ph" is an architectural signifier of change: a home that has evolved into a radical comprehensive proposal. The idea of a patio that articulates the social floor (living room, kitchen) with the grill, allows for a fluid development of both the daily and domestic activities of the home and broader social gatherings. This leads to separating the bedrooms on the ground floor, on a higher plane to improve lighti... More

40 / 60

Tasked with building only 950 Sq.Mt. on a site that would normally have been built out to 1500 Sq.Mt. meant that the project could be designed free from the need to conform to the outer setback line mandated by city planners. To this end, an internal brief was created - that 40% of the house must be a garden and 60% of the house must look into it. Hence the name, 40/60 House. Abhay Khatri Abhay Khatri Abhay Khatri The strategy to meet this internal requirement was to consolidate all the open area requirements into a garden to the south and west of the plot. The built portion was then arranged as an “L” around the 200 Sq.mt garden so that all but one of the 5 bedrooms look into the green area. The junction of the... More

10 residences implementing engineered wood flooring

Wood is an excellent flooring solution that is warm, sophisticated and high quality. Cost, durability and thickness restrictions, though, can make engineered wood flooring the most suitable application for many residential spaces. Engineered wood flooring can convey the same level of craftsmanship and solidity as natural woods with the benefit of being stronger, easier to maintain or more cost efficient.    Multiplank engineered wood floor products consist of two or three layers, designed to prevent the natural warping of wood and to ensure a solid base. The bottom layer is typically made from water-resistant plywood on which a solid top layer is glued with waterproof adhesive. Top layers are cut from fresh raw material - giving... More

JP Apartment

In this ground floor apartment, our challenge was to improve the integration of the interior spaces with the garden outside. The goal was to bring more light and the fell of the garden to the inside the apartment.  Evellyn Muller To achieve this, a wood structured roof was designed to occupy part of the garden and under it, the new kitchen area. As it is, it feels like a veranda when the glass doors are open, surrounded by garden on both sides.  Evellyn Muller The former kitchen used to be where the dining room is today. This change made it possible do remove all the walls except for the existing raw concrete pillars. With no interruption from the walls, we were able to reach the light from both sides of the social are... More
