JULCAS

Elegance, modernity and functionality shape the guiding axis that defined the remodeling of this main room with the aim of achieving a new sober and timeless space. Wooden furniture finished in natural oak veneer, with decorative touches such as large mirrors, glass shelves and the headboard with upholstery of excellent design and manufacture. Soft, ambient lighting was chosen with a warm, dimmable color temperature and indirect lighting with LED strips in boxes. Other decor... More

Gallery Lofts

Occupying the ground floor of a soft loft development, this project converted a commercial space into a ground floor penthouse. It was a start-from-scratch project, to take advantage of the high ceilings and natural light. The unit is predominantly south-facing, looking onto the walking path along the Lachine canal. It is a project which considers the boundaries of public and private, exploring how these boundaries can simultaneously be upheld and dissolved. Alex Lesage To define the boundaries of public and private, the plan consists of three nested volumes which build layers of privacy. The largest volume is the most public, an axial gallery from the front door to an external terrace. The middle volume demarcates the private portion... More

10 residences incorporating brick cladding

A brick facade expresses enduring strength. Brick can relate at once to antiquity and modernity. Historically handmade using molds and fired in kilns, bricks are imperfect products that are also strong and consistent: in the aggregate, bricks produce beautifully textured surfaces that from afar appear uniform, yet in close proximity reveal unique qualities of color and grain. The many residential brick cladding products on the market offer a seemingly limitless range of colors and textures that intend to achieve both homogeneity and a custom-made feel. The raw material which forms the basis of bricks - loam - is typically a mix of sand, silt, and clay with the inclusion of various aggregates. Some manufacturers have replaced clay with lime... More

180 steeles

In Toronto’s near suburbs, the sensitive redevelopment of low-density post WWII sprawl is a win-win opportunity whose time has come. Our residential condominium project is at the vanguard of this emerging phenomenon.  The 2.5-hectare site ticks all the boxes- located along an underutilized arterial road in a forward-looking suburban municipality that has developed new planning guidelines for urbanization. Proposed at 6.46FSI, the density of our project is a model for development that addresses the housing shortage while at the same time establishing an environmentally responsible benchmark for preserving open space. Divided House

Prior to designing this home, Jon and Elisa Clements were acutely aware of their surroundings, having lived in the street for eight years. Jon was also mindful that as their lives continue to change, the house might need to change as well, and it was planned with a divided program allowing for potential future subdivision into two separate dwellings. John Gollings The house is divided into two primary brick building forms placed at the front and rear of the site, responding to differing streetscapes and associated heritage considerations. The two forms are linked by a single storey ‘lean-to’ functioning as the gravitational centre of the home. Embracing the north-facing courtyard and garden, this meeting point accommodates... More

Casa Blanco

A young couple, in anticipation of starting a family, desired a new family home that reflected their cultural background and individual taste. He was Spanish, and was drawn to black and white minimalism. She was Mexican, and wanted splashes of color in a modern home. Caption Caption Their existing home in the Maryland suburbs was small and dark, and did not take advantage of the views to the green parkway behind it.  The design solution included razing the existing house, keeping the basement, and building a new 2 story home with a double height living space open to views and abundant natural light. Flanking the living space on two sides are kitchen, and TV lounge on the main level and bedrooms on the upper level.  C... More
