The project adds 4,738 square feet of interior space for the family, including the garage. Paul Dyer In addition to recovering the best features of a historic home, the project offered the chance to remediate and stabilize a landfill subsurface beneath the home. Excavation of the top 4-6 feet of soil was necessary for remediation of the ground condition. By excavating the top layer of soil, it became possible to lift the entire house and replace the foundation with a relatively thick mat slab. In addition, tactical redistribution of load and shear-bearing walls throughout the ground flo... More

Atherton Residence

Designed for Bay Area luminaries in Atherton, California this residence reflects a well-orchestrated response to a host of requirements, technologies, and amenities. Built for living, working, entertaining, and play, the diverse building program created the opportunity to weave a rich tapestry of form, materials, and details that reveal themselves at every corner. Anchored by the primary palette of Sapele wood and Jerusalem Limestone, the structure radiates warmth and elegance. By ‘folding’ the front yard down to the basement level, the building sensitively reduces its height and presence on the site; and through expansive glass and openings creates an engaging dialogue with the outdoors. Two-Way House

The Two-Way House embodies the marriage of San Francisco’s historic urban fabric with today’s modern needs/desires in a thoughtfully crafted home filled with daylight seamlessly connecting to the garden. Our client’s goals of filling their home with natural light while connecting inside to outside formed the transformation of this Pacific Heights row house. The Two-way House was conceived around the pairing of the original 1900 Victorian façade and traditional parlor with an open plan and modern 2-story backyard addition. The design maximizes space creating a generous single family home (with smaller 2ndapartment / in-law unit) while deftly resolving constraints that have shaped the remodel of many San Francisco homes. A series of...
