Food waste is one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Each year, millions of tonnes of food are discarded before ever reaching a plate. Squandering precious land, water, and energy while producing methane, a greenhouse gas more harmful than carbon dioxide. "Hug! Mr White" is an interactive art installation that invites people into its inner cavity with a warm, embracing posture. The ellipsoid-shaped mirrored interior creates a water-like infinite space through multiple reflections, incorporating the blue skies, green trees, blooming flowers of the Lake Trail, as well as the reflections of participants. Located in a wooded site in a rural village, the brief was for a low energy building to tread lightly; to be woven into a mature Birch Woodland with as few trees lost as possible and using sustainable materials in it’s construction, primarily timber. Flexible mould technology & precision engineered hempcrete bricks forms the structure of this Hempcrete coiled wall.  Four meter high glass windows weave between the forms 12 arches opening out onto a 360 degrees terraced area. A twisting spiral staircase becomes the sculptural centre piece which leads you up onto the roof terrace. The top of the coiled wall forms a natural barrier to the perimeter of this roof terrace without interfering with the view from this space. DS Studio, Fishtnk, and Tom Svilans are proud to announce the completion of their most recent collaborative public art commission. Located in North Kelowna, British Columbia, this joint effort between the architecture firm, fabrication studio, and architectural design consultancy has resulted in a beacon of change for the local community. The Lodestar is a place maker and a shining example of how an age-old material can be digitally modified to suit contemporary needs.
