The Dubai Mall

A Micro-Urbanism on an Unprecedented ScaleThe Dubai Mall is a retail project that defies categorisation due to its massive scale and complexity. It is not just a piece of architecture; it is a construction in a space of vast scale, and it possesses the complexity of an urban centre. Measured by covered area, it is among the largest malls in the world. Yet building a record-breaking mall was not the goal for DP Architects. Instead, the important principle throughout has been to develop a piece of architecture that will continue to be enjoyed by the entire family while giving retailers the most efficient and functional working environment. Catering to both the visitor and the retailer has created the best shopping experience in the world... More

PORTS1961 Shanghai: Flagship

For the concept of the Ports1961 Flagship Store located at the Bund in Shanghai, we had been inspired by two important factors; its history as an international port and its art-deco style. We recycled an old Chinese house and CNC-ed the wood into a fluid liner for the collection. This sculpted base features accessories such as bags, shoes and jewelry. Like an oyster, the rough outer wood walls reveal the soft glowing pearly white volumes inside, which generate a more gallery-like atmosphere. Here mannequin bodies are suspended in space, highlighting the collection’s main pieces. The mannequins are lit from above and below by recessed lighting, accentuating the fluidity of the fashion pieces. Movement created by the flagship store’s clients... More

AQUA PORTIMÃO

The Aqua Portimão Shopping Mall is located in a densely urban area on the periphery of the town of Portimão, on the west coast of the Algarve, Portugal. It is an open air shopping mall on three floors linking the different levels of the surrounding area. ALEGRO ALFRAGIDE

The proposal involved the transformation of an exhausted standalone hypermarket box with attached retail units into full blown state-of-art shopping mall keeping it as an anchor area of the future Shopping Center. The building was designed in three different levels in which the first two ones embrace multiple stores leaving to the upper floor the exclusive use of the cinema complex. Due to the topography conditions of the plot the new parking floors couldn’t be completely underground. As a result, the exterior is marked by a new basement volumetry where all the Shopping Center settles down. The design of the new commercial area is kept as a simple longitudinal geometry creating a conceptual reference alignment. The Southeast part o... More

Alegro Setúbal

The proposal for the architectural competition for the refurbishment and extension of a twenty year old Jumbo (Auchan) hypermarket in Setubal was conditioned by site and planning restrictions. The project involved the transformation of an exhausted standalone hypermarket box with attached retail units into a full blown state-of-art shopping mall. An adjoining plot was acquired for this purpose. This meant that the mall had to be developed almost entirely to one side of the hypermarket. The design process started with resolving the linkage between the existing parking with those proposed under the new extension. The municipal road dividing the two plots meant that they could not be simply linked horizontally at all levels. A system o... More

Tesco Letňany Refit

As a main Ceiling,SCS and WCP consultants we have been invited by arch.Filip Pokorny to make a technical solution of their custom made Baffle Ceiling. Vertical panels of the ceiling were designed with a "wave shaped" bottom line in three different forms. Dimensions of panels were really big - span of supports was 9 m and the max. panel height was 850 mm - what fact together with a fireproof requirement resulted into a honeycomb 36 mm sandwich structure use. Such a big panel was not possible to be installed in one piece - we made a special cutting plan which consisted of 6 different parts which allowed us to assemble all three panel shapes. To reach and clean the skylight above the Baffle ceiling a sliding panel installation was also demande... More
