The district centre of Ypenburg, located next to The Hague, was established in the nineties as part of a large city extension for 30.000 inhabitants. According to the original masterplan the district centre was to be conceived as ‘superblock’. This masterplan requirement was transformed step by step. The park was moved from the inside of the block to the outside and situated between the crescent facade and the artificial lake. The design had to embrace the history and character of The Bund, a downtown cultural district known for its art-deco style and—history as one of China’s most important ports—while creating a signature brand system that could be applied in locations around the world. The Aqua Portimão Shopping Mall is located in a densely urban area on the periphery of the town of Portimão, on the west coast of the Algarve, Portugal. It is an open air shopping mall on three floors linking the different levels of the surrounding area. The inside areas of the mall are covered with a delicate pergola consisting of structural steel trees supporting a horizontal trellis covered in multi-coloured glass and timber brise-soleil. The proposal involved the transformation of an exhausted standalone hypermarket box with attached retail units into full blown state-of-art shopping mall keeping it as an anchor area of the future Shopping Center.The building was designed in three different levels in which the first two ones embrace multiple stores leaving to the upper floor the exclusive use of the cinema complex. Due to the topography conditions of the plot the new parking floors couldn’t be completely underground. The proposal for the architectural competition for the refurbishment and extension of a twenty year old Jumbo (Auchan) hypermarket in Setubal was conditioned by site and planning restrictions. The project involved the transformation of an exhausted standalone hypermarket box with attached retail units into a full blown state-of-art shopping mall. An adjoining plot was acquired for this purpose. This meant that the mall had to be developed almost entirely to one side of the hypermarket. The design process started with resolving the linkage between the existing parking with those proposed under the new extension.
