Free Air

Free Air is a public gathering machine designed by architect Daryan Knoblauch. The pavilion is devoted to the element that connects cosmic dust with the lungs that we carry within our body: Air. José Hevia José Hevia Designed as a performative infrastructure, Free Air contributes to Barcelona's environment through its reflective surface which harvests NO2 from the air. The installation focuses on the invisible qualities of air by helping us to see, contemplate, measure and understand a natural resource which, due to the amount of man-made pollution, is threatening the health condition of all citizens alike. Free Air, which due its photocatalytic coated texture, purifies and improves the condition of the air wherever... More

pabellón ( )

Michan Architecture, Colectivo seis, Taller Paralelo and Kababie Arquitectos designed a brick pavilion unveiled at the fith edition of the Méxtropoli architectural festival 2018, in Mexico City. ‘Pabellón ( )’ was thought as a space for contemplation and reflection, which arises from the abstraction of a collapse, representing earthquakes.  Jaime Navarros The pavilion was committed not only in the memory of the catastrophe and its perpetual echo, but also to the action of change. After its short life in Méxtropoli the structure’s partitions will be donated for the reconstruction of houses destroyed in San Gregorio Atlapulco during the earthquake of 2017. Oblique Pavillion

The Oblique Pavilion is an ephemeral space, configured in a 12x9 area, located between three access streets at an event fair. The proposal arises from this challenge: to design a pavilion without pre-established facades, that could dialog with all its views, as well as allow fluidity on all sides. Studio Gui Uemura Studio Gui Uemura Studio Gui Uemura Because of this, the design is defined by the sum of angles and organic lines, which provides fluidity to a space that would be constantly busy on event days and also favors the sectoring of the program. Studio Gui Uemura Studio Gui Uemura Studio Gui Uemura In a single, closed volume at the back of the pavilion, we concentrate the entire administrative and servic... More

Temporary Munich cultural center is constructed from steel sheet pile walls

Munich-based Mahlknecht Herrle Architektur designed an interim home for Schwere Reiter, an artist collective also located in the Bavarian capital. The design concept for the new cultural center, a space for dance, theater, and music, was based around several parameters: erecting the structure in the shortest possible time, retaining the atmosphere of Schwere Reiter’s previous building, and creating something new. Mahlknecht Herrle Architektur explains that the temporary character of the new building “is underpinned by a simple construction method with a clear static system and materials that can largely be recycled after deconstruction.” Oliver Jaist Oliver Jaist The new cultural center is notable for it... Artel31 designs a temporary pavilion with reclaimed materials on a disused railway site in Bristol

Reimagined as a purpose-built folly by Artel31, the site of the former Mangotsfield station in Bristol is hosting a yearlong series of artistic commissions by local artists. The station, which served as a connecting transit point between Bristol and Birmingham, shut down in 1966, leaving behind its remnants, a distinctive memory embedded in the local history.  Charles Emerson Taking cues from Bristol’s famous art scenes, the folly developed as street architecture, introducing art into the existing environment, and endorsing its message while acknowledging its temporality.  Charles Emerson To promote usage and engagement, the firm collaborated with local groups, with the simple idea of artists taking owner... Sziget Colosseum

Innovative sustainability solutions are often born from the most evident ideas. It was also the case with Sziget Festival’s Colosseum – a party stage reminiscent of ancient amphitheaters – which for the first time was built in 2012 – and made of pallets. Hello Wood, an internationally renowned architectural firm, was inspired by the pallets lying around the Sziget Festival to create the Colosseum using this unusual material. This way the parts didn’t need to be thrown away or stored after disassembly but could be reused functionally. The experiment created a new category among festival venues: a well-usable but also spectacular architectural work – something completely different from ordinary stage struct... More

Temporary Gatehouse

The objective of the project was to design a temporary security access gatehouse for the University of Mpumalanga for the period that the new main entrance is being constructed. A big challenge from the onset of the project was the extremely limited timeframe to implement the gatehouse paired with its temporary nature.  Caption A combined consciousness of time and temporality informed the design approach and explored the conversion of two 6m containers into a gatehouse facility that contains security offices, ablutions, pedestrian, and vehicular access control to the university campus.  Caption Beyond the time advantage of a container conversion, this construction method would give a physically lighter footprint onsite... Corona Treatment Centre

We are currently experiencing a global crisis that affects almost all areas of public life and has pushed many health systems worldwide to their limit. In Berlin, the decision was made to build a corona treatment centre on the Berlin Trade Fair (Messe Berlin) in order to reduce bottlenecks in the provision of clinical care. In a matter of weeks, a reserve hospital with almost 500 beds was built in one of the exhibition halls, which creates additional capacity should the number of infections increase again.  The layout of the treatment centre is based on modular clusters with 16-24 beds and a central service zone. The structure of the clusters is adjustable depending on the intensity of care. The advantage of the cluster system, in add... More

Moon Hut

I. Moon MarshAs a general rule, there is a half-moon “Pond” in front of Hakka ancestral hall of enclosed architecture in Lingnan region, or “Moon Marsh”, as it is called, which I think to be a pool of lucid water nourishing each enclosed ancestral hall, where it contains an inexhaustible source of dew for the family. That is the origin of “Moon Hut”. So, the facade of the “Moon Hut” is expressed in the form of “Moon Marsh” of the Hakka Enclosed house. The planar profile looks like “Mid-autumn Moon”.II. Lower Your Head, Be ModestAs of today, the world becomes, in a natural way, more and more confident. Everyone is too confident in living in the world to be modest and humble as before. Everyone is conceited and overconfident in holding his he... More
