For the new workplace of Sweco at WTC The Hague, Hal2 designed and realised a 1,100 m² office interior that does not merely reflect sustainability, it demonstrates it. The project marks a milestone: it is Hal2's first interior project to receive full BREEAM Excellent certification, covering not just the design and material choices, but the entire construction process, including waste management and CO₂ reduction in transport. When a large, monumental department store stands empty in a prime location, what happens next? Following the closures of V&D and Hudson’s Bay in the Netherlands, the city faced the challenge of repurposing this iconic building. While street-level shops attracted interest, the upper floors required a new function. The district centre of Ypenburg, located next to The Hague, was established in the nineties as part of a large city extension for 30.000 inhabitants. According to the original masterplan the district centre was to be conceived as ‘superblock’. This masterplan requirement was transformed step by step. The park was moved from the inside of the block to the outside and situated between the crescent facade and the artificial lake. Situated between Central Station and the Spui, next to the new Ministries of Foreign Affairs, stands De Kroon, a 131m high rise residential tower including office- and commercial space. The area is bounded on three sides by busy traffic arteries. The basic principles of the building design are based on the plot settings of the early American skyscrapers. An important reference for the building was the early high-rise typology of the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century in Chicago. Casper Schwarz Architects designed a one floor office in the WTC The Hague that mixes these contradictions in an almost invisible way.The floor is divided in two areas by a central diagonal partition, which supplies visibility only to those areas where privacy is not at stake. From its location in The Hague, the Embassy represents the national interests of the Kingdom of a Scandinavian country in both the Netherlands and Luxembourg. The ambassador and her staff maintain relations and monitor the country’s economic, political, defence and cultural interests. For the offices of the Embassy, DZAP designed and created an interior in which certain stylistic elements, materials and details combine to create a pleasant work environment in which the embassy staff can feel at home.  More

The NLO’s move to new offices in The Hague was the perfect opportunity to transition from a traditional office environment to an open and transparent office concept. The results of the architect café, a comprehensive design workshop with the NLO, were used as the foundation for an interior design in which spaces blend into each other through flowing, organic forms. The floors are connected through an internal stairway, leading from “noise” at the core to “calm” further out. And no one has a private office. More

In the heart of the Beatrixkwartier, The Hague’s central business district, you will find The Bridge: a unique place perched above one of the Netherlands’ busiest motorways. Property developer Cromwell asked DZAP to upgrade the routing and entrance area to make the building more attractive to the current and future tenants. Moving the lift core on the ground floor was a major intervention that created a big, unified space for an inviting reception area, a function that had previously been “hidden away” on the first floor.   More

On the Beach of The Hague in The Netherlands, Scheveningen Beach, Bloot Architecture in collaboration with Architectenbureau Filip Mens designed a brand new sports Pavilion. The building is a temporarily structure that will be disassembled at the end of the summer season and than build up again in the spring. A second façade of wooden pallets give the building a warm and beachy ambiance and also emphasizes the relation between open and closed. More

The idea that buildings should possess a social significance is certainly to be found in the residential project De Oriënt in The Hague. Pivotal here was to realise homes tailored to the largely Surinamese-Hindustani community that is concentrated in the third largest city in the Netherlands, the seat of our government. The design is a combination of the typical residential blocks in The Hague, which surround semi-public courtyards, and ornamentation which reflects Hindustani influences but also refers to the Art Nouveau. The plan for De Oriënt was designed to fit a triangular ‘insertion’ into the urban structure. Following a European tender procedure, the plan by LIAG and BAM Utiliteitsbouw, district The Hague, for the development of a fire station and ambulance post on the Petroleumhaven in The Hague was judged the best by the municipality of The Hague. Work started on the building phase in September 2008. The development covered approximately 5,175 m2 and will house eight fire engines and 18 ambulances. The response team for this part of The Hague as well as a number of staff services and office functions for the corps in The Hague will be housed in the multifunctional building.
