For the new workplace of Sweco at WTC The Hague, Hal2 designed and realised a 1,100 m² office interior that does not merely reflect sustainability, it demonstrates it. The project marks a milestone: it is Hal2's first interior project to receive full BREEAM Excellent certification, covering not just the design and material choices, but the entire construction process, including waste management and CO₂ reduction in transport.
Sweco is a leading European engineering and architecture consultancy. Their new office needed to reflect those values spatially: a working environment that supports focus, collaboration and movement, while meeting the highest sustainability standards in the market.
The design is guided by the concept of the office as a micro-city. Different zones function as distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own character, scale and purpose. A dynamic routing system connects these areas naturally, encouraging both spontaneous encounters and concentrated individual work. The space is legible, layered and human in scale.
Every material choice in this project carries its sustainability credentials. Carpet tiles by Tarkett (Recharge and Grezzo series) are Cradle to Cradle Silver® certified, made from 100% recycled yarns with an EcoBase backing that enables full material recovery at end of life. Marmoleum flooring by Forbo (Cocoa) contains 98% natural raw materials and is climate positive. Interior partition walls are demountable and recyclable, constructed from partially recycled steel, glass wool and plasterboard. Glass partition systems consist of 70% recycled aluminium and are fully relocatable.
All custom joinery was produced in the Netherlands by RTR, BREEAM-compliant certified (FSC, PEFC, ISO 14001), and largely demountable or fully relocatable. Loose furniture is manufactured in Europe. 75 to 80% developed and produced in the Netherlands, and designed for disassembly, without adhesive connections. Curtains are made from 100% recycled yarn fabrics, fixed with magnets for easy removal. Wall finishes include water-based, solvent-free Texwerk coating and wood wool cement board containing 70% renewable, FSC-certified raw materials.
The result is a workplace that proves sustainability and spatial quality are not competing ambitions, they are the same project.
