Casa MAD is a two-story residence in Costa Rica. It was conceived as a dialogue between architecture and the natural landscape. Rather than imposing itself on the site, the design embraces the existing trees, allowing the built form to adapt organically to their presence. The house unfolds around a sequence of internal, lateral, and frontal courtyards that bring light and ventilation into every space, creating an intimate relationship between interior life and the surrounding vegetation. The German School of Budapest is so successful that the need to expand its building arose once again. Due to the start of the new school year, a rapid response was required, so developing an existing container building to a higher quality, with an increased capacity and an architectural character befitting the built and natural environment was envisaged. Located in a wooded site in a rural village, the brief was for a low energy building to tread lightly; to be woven into a mature Birch Woodland with as few trees lost as possible and using sustainable materials in it’s construction, primarily timber. In the Brabant countryside, where farms and fields alternate with forest plots, a new house is being built. The front of the plot is located close to the road and has unobstructed views over a rural farmland. At the rear, the plot borders the Maashorst nature reserve and extends from the road deep into the underlying coniferous forest. What immediately stands out are the 6 stately Scots pines whose crowns protrude above the other trees.
