The first defining feature of the project site is, of course, its position at the corner of two streets. Corners are strong points in the composition of the urban fabric—they are points of convergence and the beginnings of street connections. In this case, the corner is hollow, empty, awaiting linkage. In view of this specific urban situation, we felt it was appropriate to clearly reconstruct the contours of the block by respecting the existing structural lines and giving form to the corner. The Ukrainian city of Dnipro has opened a renovated Uspenska Square, one of the oldest squares in the city. It was established more than 200 years ago. Dnipro is now an industrial city with over a million dwellers located 100 kilometers from the front line of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The reconstruction of Uspenska Square began in 2021, with 80% of the work completed, but in February 2022, the construction was forced to stop due to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. But despite the ongoing war, the city is still trying to live: IDPs are coming here, and residents who left the city are returning. Dongshan Island is a healthy community-based neighbourhood creating an alternative urban typology for urbanization in China. It combines the comforts of urban living with the rural DNA of the site and is focused on creating a healthy community. Yet, the density is high: 100 homes per hectare. The area is car free and offers outdoor and shared activities for residents. Project Statement This alleyway revitalization project is part of a large-scale master planned redevelopment of a defunct warehouse district north of downtown Miami.  Over the last few years, multiple phases of new building and programming through a partnership between a local developer and a larger international entity have created the visionary new Design District.  We were asked to conceptualize a vision for an underutilized alley, that would bring a fresh new life for this abandoned space.  The scope included the alley itself, facades of new mixed-use buildings fronting the alley, the renovation of trash rooms in an existing building into small tenant spaces for the alley, as well as a paving and landscape concept. Located in North Kelowna, British Columbia, this joint effort between the architecture firm, fabrication studio, and architectural design consultancy has resulted in a beacon of change for the local community. The Lodestar is a place maker and a shining example of how an age-old material can be digitally modified to suit contemporary needs.
