Phoenix House by Harley Graham Architects becomes a metaphor for a personal rebuild
Situated in an old part of Byron, Australia, an early 1900s Queenslander home became filled with water and significantly destroyed by southerly storms. In undertaking a repair and renovation the resulting Phoenix House became a metaphor for the architect’s personal rebuild with a team of engineering, landscape designers, and contractors rising alongside Harley Graham Architects to the challenge.

Stripped back, with non-rotting components retained and reassembled, the project is described by the architect as a ‘sustainable jigsaw puzzle’ of sorts. Old casement windows were transformed into kitchen splashbacks, dark rich teak decking used to clad bedroom walls, and so on.

Federal House forms a compelling prospect and refuge relationship with its hinterland Australian site
Within the folding hills of its hinterland site in Federal, Australia, this house by Edition Office was designed as an elemental respite from high-pressure professional life. Through the prospect and refuge relationship to its site, the home provides intimate proximity to the hillside, forest and grassland to the rear of the site, while framing a panoramic gaze across the distant horizon from deep within the heavily inset living platform.

From a distance the building is recessive, a shadow within the vast landscape, clad on all four facades and the fifth façade - being the roof - with a highly textural outer skin of thick timber battens.

Our team has been mandated to add a new room to a townhouse in Quebec City. The 112 sq. ft. expansion takes place in the house back yard. The idea intended was to provide a simple contemporary gesture that could easily fit into the architectural ethics of the neighbourhood.The owners have expanded to create a new logic into their living spaces. Space, light, intimacy and "openness to the outside" are the key words of this conception.The extension takes the form of a dark tinted glass cube. The project tries to configure an idea of living conceived as fluid space, protected but at the same time interconnected with the surrounding landscape, able to grant privacy to the family but to project it perceptively in a wider spatiality, to connect it to the scale of the neighbourhood.The house presents itself as a diaphragm of open and closed, built and natural spaces variously interlaced. Donated to the borough of reggio emilia by mrs anna maria ternelli gerra with the aim of creating a new cultural venue in the town, dedicated to her husband the artist marco gerra (1925-2000), the ex-hotel cairoli, in piazza xxv aprile, has become a new space for photography and contemporary art.
