Our client owned this Victorian shop in Marchmont, Edinburgh for several years. They commissioned Capital A to re-design the shop as a two bedroom flat. This was a challenge, as the property is in a conservation area and the layout is not simple. Caption Creating a design which satisfied the planners, and also the building regulations, was a challenge. Preserving as much of the original shop front and internal features was a priority but the client had a keen desire for a modern layout. Our UHNI client purchased a grand 600 square metre maisonette in Cadogan Square, Knighstbrige, which is one of the most desirable luxury residential addresses in London. It was a Grade II listed building that required significant renovation works.  The area of Cadogan Garden is known for its exclusivity and noble red-brick buildings. The square was built around the 1870s to 1880s, mostly on the grounds of the well known Prince's Club. For the newly purchased Pacific Heights Victorian home, we transformed the dark, outdated kitchen into a light-filled, modern gathering space, perfect for cooking or relaxing. The galley-style floor plan balances sultry surfaces with materials selected to reflect and pull in light. Awash in silver wave stormy marble pattern, the intricate, multi-hued black, grey, bronze and white veining, is juxtaposed with crisp white cabinetry and matted-black pulls. Smoked-glass upper cabinets bounce light. Ebony-stained, herringbone wood flooring, further defines the space, establishing a moody elegance. Tower Cottage is a wonderfully petite and eccentric piece of Victorian architecture. Formerly a parsonage, the building was not originally designed as a practical house. Our scheme doesn't extend the house at all (there is nowhere to go), but it does radically re-organise the spaces and transforms the property into a workable and elegant home.   The old single glazed conservatory has been replaced with a new doubled glazed structure, which has additional structural and solar shading from Douglas Fir timber fins. Space is always at a premium in London and with this build, we were challenged to extend the space to allow the client to live and work in comfort.  Materials used in this project excitingly blend old with new: Victorian architecture against modern, efficient glass. Within a triangular shaped extension we housed a new bedroom and ensuite bathroom.  We inserted a glazed lobby area, filling the existing kitchen with light whilst providing visual and practical connections to the outside and the extension areas respectively.
