Crafted in Finland, Lunawood ThermoWood® creates a connection between urban people and nature all around the world. Lunawood is a chemical-free wood material produced by using only natural methods, heat, and steam. The renewable and PEFC-certified Nordic forests provides us the best wood material for our products, that will last for decades. With more than 20 years of expertise, Lunawood's products are manufactured through a patented ThermoWood® process, guaranteeing consistently high and stable quality. As a result, we can provide architects and designers sustainable and long-lasting wood products that store carbon for decades. (Lunawood EPD).
Product Benefits
The patented ThermoWood® process, permanently improves the wood’s properties, thereby expanding the range of applications in which the wood can be used. Lunawood is dimensionally stable and resistant to decay in all climates, making it an excellent choice for facades and landscaping projects.
Low maintenance:As Lunawood doesn’t necessarily require a separate surface treatment, it is also an easy maintenance choice. When left untreated, it gradually develops a beautiful silver colour.
Dimensionally stable:Lunawood’s crowning trait is its lowered equilibrium moisture content, making it dimensionally stable, and the material retains its shape far better than untreated wood.
Resin free:During the thermal modification process, the resin is removed from the wood. This allows Lunawood ThermoWood to be used in interior applications, such as walls and ceilings. Lunawood is also highly suitable for sauna and spa facilities.
Pleasant features:Lunawood's products are characterized by their natural scent and appearance, which appeals to all the senses. Thus, its charm is not based only on excellent technical features but on the atmosphere it creates in the space.
Sustainability at the Core
Sustainable development is at the heart of Lunawood’s operations, from the sourcing of raw materials to responsible ThermoWood® production and end products with a long life cycle. Lunawood’s raw material comes from Finnish forests, which sequester carbon as they grow, acting as a carbon sink. The carbon footprint of Lunawood’s planed ThermoWood® is remarkably small, at 117 kg CO2e/m³ (Lunawood EPD). Lunawood’s products store five times the amount of carbon dioxide from the air compared to the CO2 emissions released during their production. This offers builders an opportunity to curb their construction emissions by replacing their non-renewable materials with Lunawood Thermowood.
The prolonged life cycle of Lunawood ThermoWood enables our materials to act as carbon storage from one generation to the next.
Naturally Grey Lunawood ThermoWood
Lunawood products have a beautiful uniform brown tone as a result of the thermal modification process. Like any other natural timber, the brown color naturally weathers over time to a beautiful silver-gray patina if the wood is left untreated outside with pigmented and UV-protected wood oil. Even when weathered to silver grey, Lunawood ThermoWood maintains its resistance to decay and dimensional stability. The weathered Lunawood is an easy-maintenance choice for exterior cladding, as it does not need a separate surface treatment.
Lunawood Collection
The Lunawood Collection includes several tongue-and-groove cladding options, hidden fixing decking boards, as well as a wide range of battens suitable for even the most creative designs. The Lunawood Collection covers several high-quality and easy-to-install cladding options for exterior and interior surfaces.
The raw material of Lunawood Collection products is PEFC-certified Nordic pine and spruce, which gives the products a natural and lively look. The products are characterized by a lively wood surface with healthy knots.
To support planning with Lunawood Collection products and to find a suitable product, Lunawood offers digital design tools for Revit and ArchiCAD programs, as well as material images.
Fire Retardant Options
Lunawood offers several premium ThermoWood® products with impregnated BurnBlock® fire protection. The fire-retardant treatment enables the use of Lunawood ThermoWood® in buildings requiring a fire class B rating. Thanks to its non-toxic composition, Lunawood ThermoWood® with BurnBlock® fire-retardant treatment is also suitable for indoor applications, such as wall and ceiling panels, providing reliable fire protection. The used technology and method for fire protection is a documented, CE-marked treatment process which enables a consistent quality of fire protection.
A Pioneering Manufacturer of ThermoWood®
The story of Lunawood began with the dream of two visionary brothers, Olavi and Aulis Kärkkäinen, who experimented in the 1990s with a firing kiln for the thermal treatment of wood. Thanks to their work, the idea of wood processing with heat and steam only was developed in Finland into a certified ThermoWood® process. Today, with the same passion, Lunawood offers sustainable and long-lasting ThermoWood® products for architecture and design all around the world.
