The Digital Faraday Cage Project is conceived as a part of an architectural exhibition /Dwelling Elements/ and a social commentary on paralyzing addiction to digital connectivity in the domestic environment. The project responds to the need to unplug and wean off excessive media consumption via two common domestic elements—lounge chair and dining table.
The DFC Ball Chair reinterprets the iconic Ball Chair, designed by Eero Aarnio. In its original, 1960s context, the chair was ‘a room within a room,’ intended as a private space for relaxing or having a phone call. Now it is reconsidered as a private space for relaxing, sans phone calls & digital connectivity. Lined with aluminum sheets and grounded conductive metal mesh, the small architectural enclosure absorbs electromagnetic transmissions and severely blocks mobile phone and Wi-Fi signals, forming a Faraday Cage that envelops its occupant in a digitally-disconnected bubble.
[Its pair : The DFC Dining Table is IKEA-style, flat-pack domestic furniture. Diners surrender their digital devices in the faraday cage drawers underneath the tabletop at mealtimes, returning meaningful conversations and genuine human connections to the table.]
