The extension to this house in Toronto's Summerhill neighbourhood imagines the insertion of space into an existing brick volume. That space rises behind the archival brick chimney as a slot of space that reaches towards the sunlight, while also forming the steel mass that sits over its horizontal expanse.
Entry into the house is made deliberately more circuitous with entrants winding up the concealed stained stair and porch enclosure. That lateral movement to the front door is a response to the existing layout of space and partition at the interior of the front of the house. As the centrally located Kitchen is passed, the space of the house opens to the rear, with the intention of inviting both movement and pause.
