Residence Alji renovation.

Nico van der Meulen Architects was commissioned to revitalize and expand a 1980s bungalow, infusing it with their signature architectural approach. The design intent focused on crafting a modern residence characterized by open-plan living spaces optimized for an abundance of north light.

Key elements of the redesign included the preservation of the existing tennis court, the replacement of the driveway and garage doors, and the introduction of a serene koi pond at the entrance. This water feature is elegantly accessed via concrete stepping stones that direct visitors to a contemporary pivoting front door.

A grand entrance hall was conceived, featuring a striking staircase that serves as a focal point within the home. The kitchen is seamlessly integrated into the main living area, enhancing connectivity and functionality. Remarkably, the bungalow’s robust structural integrity allowed for the retention of most exterior walls on the ground floor, while interior partitions were removed, and the north-facing walls were replaced with expansive glass, flooding the spaces with natural light.

The family room was transformed into a double-volume area, now hosting a new lanai and an infinity pool that fosters a sense of tranquility and spaciousness. Above, a newly designed first floor accommodates a pajama lounge, a luxurious master suite, and three children’s suites, all capped by an innovative butterfly roof that captures additional sunlight from the north.  A roomy, glass enclosed  on the first floor overlooks the family room.

The interior design complements the architectural vision and was executed by M Square Lifestyle Design, a collaborative partner within Nico van der Meulen Architects.
