Hong Kong Children’s Hospital

Hong Kong Children’s Hospital is the first hospital in Hong Kong specialized for children and adolescents up to 18 years-old with serious and life-threatening illness.

HKCH is sited within the hospital cluster at the South Apron of Kai-Tak Development area, together with the planned new acute general hospital at adjacent sites will form a medical-hub for the district. It occupies a prominent waterfront location with extra-long frontage facing unobstructed sea view, this advantage has greatly contributed towards positive healing process of our patients.

‘Podium-free’ concept is adopted to enhance street-level connectivity with the surrounding neighbourhoods and create a wind-corridor for better cross ventilation. The Central Garden between the two towers connects seamlessly with the future waterfront promenade.

Welcoming Sense of Arrival
The drop-off area opened up to a large lawn area which offers direct view to the promenade and harbour, creating a pleasant sense of arrival. Continuous, accessible for all age-groups and direct pedestrian covered walkway is provided to link up all the main entrances with the drop off area and functional area. Abstract trees, clouds and birds are integrated in the architecture to greet all users once they arrived.

Generous areas of soft landscape are proposed on ground floor, terraces and roofs, as well as in the form of vertical greening has a profound healing effect which aids to relief stresses, evocates empathy and balance emotion. A vibrant and dynamic façade composed of coloured patterned vertical glass fins and a touch of coloured claddings enlightened the atmosphere.

Each patient floor is featured with a different habitat and animal graphics to provide a friendly and inspirational environment as well as creating story telling opportunities that may help to communicate with younger patients through the stimulation of senses.

Strategic Planning
Future linkbridges and service tunnels at basement are planned to connect new acute hospital (under construction) to form a medical hub. Visitors, Patients and staffs can make use of these connections for efficient services and supplies delivery under a controlled environment.

Precise traffic patterns and pedestrian circulation within the hospital to ensure patients and supplies are urgently attended to at all times. A clear and well orientated circulation pattern is envisaged by simple and effective planning, staffs are still easily accessible with Central Staff Base close to clusters of single rooms. Open counters are adopted that creates friendly environment for patients and families to seek for help.   Satellite nurse stations are carefully placed inside the ward to reduce the time for staff to get access to patients in need.

Specialist Out-patient Clinic has interesting pockets of waiting spaces which are integrated with the play areas to create a cozy environment. All bedrooms in wards are provided with natural-light and view. Internal courtyards and skylights are introduced at centre location to maximize daylight penetration, natural ventilation and connection to outdoor environment. The scenic views of the waterfront to the Victoria Harbour together with the number of play elements will also uplift the spirit of the children during their stay at the hospital.
