Minwoojae is a remodeling project that adds an Oriental aesthetic charm to a classic Korean house built over 60 years ago. To break away from the image of an aging home, all aspects of the exterior were refurbished—including foundational facilities, outer walls, fences, and the main gate. A consistent use of finishing materials and incorporation of traditional elements throughout the interior and exterior allowed for a seamless and harmonious flow between the spaces.

Possessing both the value of time and the hidden potential within its aged facade, Minwoojae underwent foundational reinforcement and exterior restoration to remove its outdated image. The fence was designed to ensure privacy while maintaining a sense of openness from within the courtyard. A see-through window made of fabric laminated glass and a bamboo landscape were introduced to create a natural visual barrier. The combination of light khaki-colored outer walls and a deep brown fence brings forth a modern yet calming atmosphere. The main gate, crafted from japanese cedar in a traditional louver pattern, adds a contemporary touch with Oriental sensibilities.

The tea room, filled with Oriental ambiance, is composed of a traditional louver-style wooden door, lattice frames, a tatami floor, and a hanji-inspired barrisol light. A dimming feature enhances the beauty of light variations, and the glow filtering between the light and louver highlights the space's Oriental elegance. The glass inner door in the entrance serves as a frame to fully capture the beauty of the tea room space at the front. A wooden window seat for quiet contemplation was installed with generous depth to enhance spatial dimensionality.

The curved wall connecting the living room and dining area was designed to maintain a flow between spaces. Near the dining table, a voluminous wood-clad wall, round table, and hanji pendant lighting come together to embody the aesthetics of curves. In the kitchen, a black stone island table and a stone sink emphasize the tactile beauty of natural materials. A sleek mid-way cabinet with open wood shelving completes the space with a clean, modern showcase style.

On the second floor, a compact 20-pyeong layout was planned with precision to include a living room, children’s room, master bedroom, and powder room. Large framed windows and soft panel-style fabric curtains fill the space with natural light. At the entrance to the master bedroom, double sliding doors with traditional lattice patterns express Oriental design sensibilities, while a deep khaki headboard paired with warm wood tones creates a calm and refined sleeping environment.
