Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter, working with Karlsson Arkitekter, has won the competition for a major new psychiatric hospital in Slagelse and will now be turnkey consultant for Region Zealand.
In addition to VLA and Karlsson Arkitekter the team consists of Signal arkitekter, Schønherr, Moe & Brødsgaard, NNE and Cenergia.
With its 44 000 square metres the project is the largest psychiatric building in recent times and will have room for 190 patients in general psychiatric, forensic psychiatric and secure wards. There will also be a sports hall and swimming pool, and research and teaching facilities. Completion is expected in 2014.
The panel wrote: “The overall disposition is simple, clear and functional in an exemplary way. A splendid, highly convincing feature of the plan is that it enables the creation of a fine-meshed, varied, flexible physical setting for the functions of the hospital internally while maintaining the simple, well-resolved architectural idiom externally”.
