Penthouse Modification Bern Kirchenfeld

Penthouse Modification Bern Kirchenfeld

On top of the World

The patrician house was built in 1919 and is located in a privileged site, on a southwest slope looking towards the old town of Berne and the river Aare. The task of the project was to transform the roof level into an independent apartment. Previously this level had rooms for house personnel and storage. The new penthouse takes advantage of the well-proportioned, practically square plan of the house and transforms the whole level as a continuous space. The central main space points out the principal orientation of the house and neutralises the displaced position of the side rooms and roof-lights. The central space serves as a living and dining room, the side rooms as bedroom, dressing, office, kitchen and bathroom. Last one only disposes of a door. On one side the project refers to and respects the historical substance, on the other side it transforms the existing by introducing a coherent reduced and minimalist design in all interventions. A refreshing loft character distinguishes the luxurious apartment. There are no alterations to the exterior appearance of the building.
