The Family Duplex

The residents of this duplex apartment are a family of 5, a couple and their 3 teenage children. They bought this old apartment in an old quiet street of Tel-Aviv after living 13 years overseas. The project includes a complete renovation of the existing 130 sqm apartment and its additional 70 sqm floor on the roof.

The owners wished to renovate this old and dark 4-bedroom apartment into a bright and light home suitable for their family's needs. For that to happen we had to find the right space for a master bedroom, an additional bedroom, a laundry room, and a quiet home office.

The house's great number of windows and its four facades compensated for its unique long and narrow structure and made it easier to utilize the space. The main floor plan includes the kitchen, dining area & living room, three kids' rooms, kids' bathroom & a laundry room while the upper floor contains:a master bedroom, home-office and two roof terraces.

The apartment's small entrance hall meets the dining areaand in order togradient the entrance to the house, we placed a white steel Mashrabiya that frames and divides the two spaces, while kipping the light and bright atmosphere. The Mashrabiya is connected to the tall kitchen cabinets and designed as a perforated face of the 'white cube'that forms the center of the main floor of the house.

The living room faces the kitchen to the special request of this foodie family and the big living room window was framed by sage green carpentry designed to create a relaxing spot for the family to enjoy the view of the green pastoral street. On the second floor we divided the roof terrace to a family terrace that includes separate new exit, an outdoor kitchen, dining, and lounging area for the family to enjoy and entertain. And a private terrace for the couple to enjoy without interruptions. We used the master bedroom entrance hall for a light and quite home office that over looks the staircase and gets lots of natural light from the staircase's skylight.
