Part of a larger scheme for the development of the coastal belt of Malinska, the Duboak - maritime heritage interpretation centre designed by NFO is a result of an architectural competition open to the public. In spite of the steady tourism boom over the years, the Waterfront of Malinska remained disused and neglected, leading to the need to revamp the public spaces.
Located in an extended part of the park, the facade of the interpretation centre faces the main public square. The roof dramatically arches over the structure and functions as a Mediterranean garden and a viewing deck.
Wooden V-shaped columns support the expansive green roof, creating a dynamic layout for the centre. The contemporary interpretation space not just portrays the heritage and history of Malinska but also the evolution of the entire town centre. Additionally, the centre offers space for educational workshops, events and gatherings where the legacy of caulkers and shipbuilders can be passed on to future generations.
Apart from the multi-functional exhibition space, the centre also comprises Sailing Club and Sports fishing club to attract a crowd outside of the tourist season. The project revives the place and returns it to the park, enhanced with new facilities, cultivating a potential to become a public space catalyst.
Thus, the tiny island town of Malinska is exemplary of public space rejuvenation through its inclusive and integrated approach to solving public realm issues, from a public architectural competition to its final implementation.
