With a strong sense of prop and use of materials, 9Studio Design Group designed their Canton City, China design studio to appear like the setting of a science fiction movie. Key to achieving the look and mood of the design was a pure and simple use of black steel panels as a dominant feature.
Alongside the use of black steel, metal mesh, special paint, natural bamboo, wood and biofiber plastic composite and quartz brick are used to achieve the pure and futuristic look of the space. The material concept also reinforces the central mission of the design company, which is seeking out the purity of design through the nature of materials.
A feature desk, combining wood joints with steel panels looks like a butterfly that appears light and heavy at the same time. The symmetric shape facilitates the smooth circulation of the workflow.
In terms of layout, a lounge is located on the first floor with the second floor as a working area. A long table in the centre of the space facilitates work and discussions with supporting functions such as an LED screen, storage cabinets, printing room, material room and library laid out on the periphery. There is no director’s office here, with each employee free to walk and exchange ideas within their own choice of work area.
A sense of relaxation within the workspace is enhanced by the adjacent pond and greenery outdoors, and a kitchen/dining area indoors that features warm bamboo panels on the ceiling.
