Empire Tower – a bold building in the midst of potential icons

Designed by Andrew Bromberg of Aedas, Empire Tower is a 60-storey residential tower located in the middle of a master plan filled with potential icons.

The design standardises the units but manipulates the sections to develop a very dynamic solution, which holds its own amidst the visual clutter of its neighbours. This was deemed important for the financial viability of this project that is dependent on pre-sales within a very competitive market.

The 60 non-typical floor plates are dynamically held together by the ‘blades’, creating an iconic feature on the water’s edge. The design maximises the towers presence on the street with vertical layers spreading out to the property lines. The building then bends back away from the street across from a large commercial tower allowing for an enlarged view corridor between the central park of the community and the sea a block away. The splayed vertical layers converge while rising up before bending forward together as the 249-meter tower rises toward the sky, maximising its views between the park and the sea.

Empire Tower was Highly Commended in the Residential Project (Future) category in Cityscape Awards 2011. Its design has also won The International Architecture Award presented by The Chicago Athenaeum in 2010, and Four Stars award in the Best High-Rise Architecture Award, Abu Dhabi, presented by Arabian Property Awards in 2008.
