Garden room Amsterdam

In the heart of Amsterdam is this small housing extension. The increasing pressure on the housing market and the need for families to continue living in the city was weighed against the emerging appreciation of existing outdoor spaces and the importance of preserving greenery in the neighbourhood. The design for the garden room is therefore inspired by the greenhouse.

The steel frame with glass infill creates a light and open space where indoors and outdoors merge. The facades and roof of the extension are made of insulated steel profiles of the Swiss brand Forster. These ultra-slim profiles are double-glazed and finished on the outside with Renoseal, a modern replacement for the classic putty. The glass façade and roof are partly supported by a steel structure whose columns are incorporated in the timber-frame walls and the beams are left in sight. The new extension replaces an existing extension in a postage-stamp location. Due to its incorporation into the existing environment, it is fully custom designed. The site is enclosed on three sides by neighbouring properties, making the incorporation extremely complex.

The three outer walls lying on the property boundary are constructed of timber frame construction due to feasibility. The steel skeleton connects to it and creates an openness on the garden side. In line with the house is a closed section. This part has a green roof with a 25cm thick substrate layer so it is possible to grow flowers and plants here. The flat roof has the wooden beams visible at the bottom, creating a nice combination of wood and steel in the interior space. The steel frame allows for a large openness of the space to the surroundings. Through its incorporation, the extension forms an extension of both the house and the garden. A place to enjoy all days of the year.
