The interchange station in Żory is a public space that combines the functions of a station, a square and a meeting place. The priority while designing the bus station was safety and the convenience for travellers. It was attempted to consolidate the pedestrian communication area within an island - a waiting-room square around which particular platforms were located. Thanks to this, the pedestrian streams were separated from traffic. The use of clinker in the floor and walls around the square is a bow to the historic buildings of the nearby old town. The authors' intention was to create a structure that would not be a traditional building but more an element that would formally limit the public space. Thus, the station has a form of a roofed square. Its space is limited by a glass facade, thanks to which it becomes fully transparent - the border between the interior and the surroundings is lost. Located in the central part of the square, it allows the travellers staying inside of undisturbed observation of the life outside. Levitating awning reaches far beyond the outline of the building which protects the travellers standing on the platforms from the bad weather. Wide eaves carry the function of shading the glass facades. They protect the building from overheating in the summer, while allowing the penetration of the sun in winter, which significantly reduces the energy consumption for the needs of heating and cooling.
The interior of the station is single-spaced and all its functions are hidden in the centrally located service shaft, which includes, among others service premises and public toilets. This core was faced with wood, which gives it the character of a large piece of furniture. This impression is compounded by wide stairs forming the forum where travellers can relax, meet, read a book or recharge their phones and laptops in the built-in sockets. Amphitheatre stairs lead up to the mezzanine level. Its completely open usable space is intended for various public functions (e.g. temporary exhibitions, cafes). This open to the city, perfectly located station, is meant to become more than just a transfer center - it is a modern agora and a new friendly public place in Żory.
