「Under the Poplar Tree」located in the Songhua Lake resort. The client needed to build a structure at the foot of the mountain that would serve both recreational and sports functions for people who participate in various mountain sports: skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, bicycle motocross, skateboarding, etc.
We wanted the new building to be symbiotic with the original nature, like wild mushrooms growing in the soil by the trees after a rain. During the site visit, five poplar trees clustered together provided a wonderful place for our idea.
By walking around the trees, we defined the area underneath them and raised half of them to roof level, stretching the original two-dimensional plane underneath the trees into a three-dimensional "under poplar" space that rises slowly along a curve - from different positions, angles and heights, different intentions were created. The difference in location, angle and height creates different intentions. In the space, people can simultaneously perceive the static poplar tree and enjoy the changing landscape.
