Drawing from the essence of Athenian culture, Avli by tashas is a dining concept in the UAE designed by B&SStudio that draws from Greek forms and culture without resulting in a stereotypical palette or approach.
The honest materiality and design strategy draws from research trips undertaken by the designers to South Africa and Greece. Pieces selected for the space are handmade, local and sustainable with artisans engaged to complete bespoke elements for the project. Solid timbers, metals and natural stones are used in a layered way that brings the layering and authenticity of Athenian grit to life.
Making further reference to Greek culture and life, a carved sandstone storefront is surrounded by olive trees reminiscent of simple villas strewn along the Cypriot coastline, while the cavernous entrance houses art pieces curated from various artists in Greece, South Africa and Australia. The entrance lobby also showcases a mosaic art inlay of horses and Greek forms, while a whimsical installation overhead mimics stone-washed linens drying in an olive grove.
The L-shaped layout of the space was divided by an existing central kitchen. The designers opened up the kitchen to create a visual connection to the new show kitchen. The reception became its own welcoming space in turn.
