Reference projects
Pittsburgh International Airport
The Pittsburgh International Airport underwent a significant flooring update to enhance its appearance, durability, and functionality in response to the high volume of foot traffic it receives year-round. The project aimed to replace the outdated 23-year-old broadloom carpet with new, innovative flooring that reflects the city's heritage while providing crucial wayfinding cues for travelers. Working with the architecture and design firm Michael Baker International, the project incorporated customized colors by Patcraft, featuring bright greens, sky blues, calming greys, and vivid reds. These colors were chosen to represent Pittsburgh's regional geography and assist passengers in easily navigating the airport through visual cues linked to specific concourses.
The new flooring by Patcraft design highlights a “chevron” pattern, reminiscent of the area's mountainous landscape and evergreen trees. Passengers returning to the international concourse were greeted with a completely refreshed environment, leading to an overwhelmingly positive reception, with travelers commenting that they “didn’t recognize the place.” The upgraded carpet tiles prioritize comfort and functionality, providing excellent rollability for luggage and enhancing acoustics, creating a quieter environment compared to the previously used terrazzo. This project stands as a testament to the airport's commitment to offering a unique, customer-centered experience that distinguishes it from the stark, often uniform designs found in many modern airports.
First Immanuel Lutheran School
First Immanuel Lutheran School underwent a transformative redesign to meet the needs of modern education. With a history spanning 64 years, the original building lacked the necessary features for contemporary learning. Partnering with GROTH Design Group Inc., the school replaced its outdated structure with a vibrant, two-story, 31,000 sq. ft. facility, completed in August 2020. The new design incorporates natural light, open spaces, and innovative layouts, including 14 classrooms and flexible collaboration areas with movable glass walls.
The renovation also introduced an outdoor learning courtyard and incorporated versatile flooring from Patcraft. Dynamic patterns in colors like purple, blue, green, and red, along with neutral-toned resilient planks, created distinct learning zones and facilitated wayfinding. The result is an inviting and cheerful environment where students thrive, fostering collaboration and creativity. Cindy Gall of GROTH Design Group emphasized the importance of patterns and a complementary color palette in their design choices.
