The furniture piece was a part of our proposal for an interior design project. The project brief was to upgrade a 50m2 studio apartment in a heritage building (The Grand Hotel on Spencer St) of high ceiling, for a client living on her own, who wanted a simple space free of clutter, with the flexibility for her to invite occasional guests over for dinner where she make a roast..etc. Rather than relying completely on the architecture to solve the problem of flexible living, our thought was to customize the furniture so it helps address one of the architecture challenges of flexible living, in particular, how to have a large gathering in a house of small footprint. The design outcome was a cosy round table for 2, with two "flaps" or wings that can be folded up to tranform to a rectangular table for a small party of 6.
