Part of a project by the NGO, Vatavaran for sanitation and public health in the two Urban villages of Hauz Khas and Shahpur Jat, these toilets were designed to be a prototype. Designed to be used by semi-rural and urban folk, the design tried to address issues of water harvesting, recycling of waste water while reducing dependence on energy and civic infrastructure.
The design seeks to establish each toilet as a stand-alone facility that could be replicated in numerous locations.
It also seeks to re-image the public toilet from a one-size fits all to a more contextual solution that is location specific as an alternative to the present trend in public toilet installation across the city.
