Our PdP Pulled Plaster Panels were born out of real-world material experimentation in our Gerken Residence project, completed in 2015. In developing this prototype, we moved fluidly between digital modeling and full-scale mockups to create a dynamic geometry that facilitates unlimited layout possibilities. The panel’s geometry is very much intertwined with the process of its making, as each was manually pulled and used to generate a mold for casting the final panels. Each distinct geometry evokes momentum and weight from its creation, uniting the artisan craft of its fabrication with a modern and sophisticated aesthetic. Throughout the design process we developed six unique 7’ x 6” panels, over 600 of which were successfully installed in the Gerken Residence. Seamless adjacencies between each of the panels were created to obscure the reading of any one individual panel, resulting in a sculpted monolith. The continuity of the monolith's surface appears restrained and quiet in some areas, while it appears to flutter in a manner suggestive of draped cloth in others. Specifically, the PdP panel layout used at the Gerken Residence is a simple vertical running bond with random variations of S-Curves, Saw Tooth, and Smooth panels.
