In 1930, furniture designer Kaare Klint designed a sofa for the office of Danish Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning. Carl Hansen & Son is now reviving the elegant design.
Carl Hansen & Son is adding yet another design classic by Kaare Klint, the father of Danish furniture design, to its collection of Danish furniture icons. Featuring high sides and characteristic crossbars, the upholstered coupé sofa is a stylish testament to the vision of one of Denmark’s most important designers.
Kaare Klint’s impact on Danish furniture design cannot be overstated. As a pioneer of functionalism, he came to play a decisive role in the Danish Modern movement. With his legendary Faaborg Chair, Klint created Denmark’s first modern design classic, and, by virtue of this unique piece of furniture, laid the foundation for Danish design’s emergence onto the global stage.
As early as 1930, Klint forged a path for modern Danish design, demonstrating his stylistic confidence with the high-sided sofa, which was originally commissioned for Danish Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning’s office at Christiansborg Palace, the seat of the Danish Parliament. Carl Hansen & Son is now reviving the elegant sofa and adding it to its existing collection of the designer’s world-famous pieces, including Klint’s iconic Faaborg Chair from 1914, innovative Propeller Stool from 1930, and worldrenowned Safari Chair from 1933.
