1. Glass Installation “Soundscape”
Designed using transparent glass and the intangible nature of sound, this exhibit captures a moment in time where a single sheet of glass has shattered into a number of shards dispersed throughout the air, making visitors feel as though time is standing still. Each single sheet of glass that is scattered throughout this space has been designed to emit different nature sounds, such as birds chirping, babbling streams, the sound of waves, etc. Just like when taking a real nature walk, this exhibit provides a multi-layered soundscape in which the sounds can be sensed differently depending on the location they are being heard at, in addition to providing each visitor with a distinctly different scene to experience.
The sound sources for the nature sounds used in this space are all based on field recordings. The theme for the exhibit is the “water cycle,” where water vapor turns into water droplets, which then flow as water through streams until they reach the ocean.
Utilizing the ephemeral yet enduring beauty of glass to craft this space, this soundscape presents visitors with a subtle glimpse into the distinctive possibilities that glass offers as a material for creating such “auditory spaces”.
About the Products Used and Acoustic Space Design
• Sound-generating glass: 35 sheets (24 sheets suspended in air, 11 sheets placed on the floor)
• Sound-generating glass: approximately 0.2 to 1.2m2 (irregularly shaped quadrilaterals and pentagons)
• Weight: approximately 4 to 24 kg
• Oscillators: 2 methods are used, namely, one method where the oscillator is directly affixed to the glass, and another method where the oscillator is positioned at a location away from the glass and vibrations are transmitted via rods by using a principle similar to a “tin can telephone”.
• Using multichannel technology, different sounds will be played at various locations of the exhibit.
2. Listening Room
This room allows visitors to fully experience the sound produced by the novel sound-generating glass developed by AGC.
