16 May 2017 Trifold, a flexible insulating cork composite, brings to life an entirely new model of cork construction and application. TriFold enhances cork’s naturally occurring properties through a multi-layered cork-textile network. The symbiotic relationship between compression and tension render unsupported, low-profile cork structures possible. The composite’s impressive strength to thickness ratio offers a wealth of opportunities in both domestic and public applications as well as batch and mass-manufactured products and construction materials. The material can be adapted with regard to strength, physical properties, colours and appearance. TriFold has been used as acoustical wall coverings, furniture, and architectural structures. Development In addition to cork’s ecological credentials, the material has a long list of impressive inherent properties – biodegradability, compressive cellular structure and low density. These feature suggest a diverse range of applications, however the use of cork hasn’t evolved far beyond that of the conventional wine stopper. Supported by Corticeira Amorim, the world’s largest cork manufacturer, TriFold is the result of my intensive, two-year research period during which I explored ways of adding tangible value to cork as a means to diversify the industry.
