Reference projects

Suburban Loci

Transforming an orange brick 1950s house into a light-filled contemporary home is all about harnessing and enhancing natural light. The existing structure in the Eastern mid-suburbs of Melbourne had north-facing rooms, presenting a unique opportunity to maximize sunlight. By refurbishing the original steel-framed corner windows, the architects allowed more light to penetrate into the living spaces.

Strategically placed lighting fixtures like the sleek Masson Tullyspot and surface-mounted LED downlights illuminate the spaces effectively during the evening. These fixtures provide flexibility while ensuring that each corner of the home remains warm and inviting. The design approach focused on bringing light into all areas of the house—not just through windows but by reflecting and diffusing it throughout. This transformation brightened the interiors and created a vibrant atmosphere, showcasing the beauty of the surrounding garden and turning the once-dreary space into a contemporary haven.

Northcote Terrace

Northcote Terrace is a renovation project that transforms a tired, single-story terrace house into a modern family home. The project addresses the site's constraints, including its narrow width, south-facing orientation, and limited external connection, by strategically placing roof windows and skylights to bring in natural light and frame the sky.  The interior design emphasizes natural materials and efficient use of space. The ground floor features exposed brick and a hydronic heated slab, while the upper levels are characterized by exposed timber framing and white plasterboard.

The Masson Tullyspot is an ideal lighting solution for the Northcote Terrace renovation project due to its versatility, energy efficiency, and ability to enhance the architectural features of the space. This flexibility enables the creation of specific lighting scenarios to highlight architectural details, such as exposed brickwork, timber beams, and skylights. Its compact size and minimalist aesthetic ensure that the focus remains on the architectural elements, rather than the lighting fixtures themselves.

Brunswick Lean-To

The Brunswick Cottage extension is a thoughtful response to a heritage-listed site, prioritizing sustainability and minimalist design. The limited footprint and strategic placement of the new building preserve the edible garden and the original lounge room, minimizing disruption to the historic structure. The sliding timber screens on the northern façade offer a versatile solution for controlling light, heat, and privacy. These screens can be adjusted to create various indoor-outdoor living experiences, enhancing the connection to the garden and the surrounding environment.

By focusing on a sensitive approach to small-scale residential regeneration, this project demonstrates how thoughtful design can create a significant impact on a limited site. The Masson Tullyspot lighting system, with its customizable options and energy-efficient LED technology, is an ideal choice for illuminating this extension. By strategically placing these fixtures, the designers highlight the architectural details, such as the timber screens and the interplay of light and shadow, while creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
