Wood products play a significant role in the circular economy.  The circular economy is an economic model that aims to minimise waste and maximise the use of resources. At Abodo we have created a product from defective, re-worked thermally modified FSC®-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) New Zealand Radiata Pine in the form of our Vulcan Shingles.

The journey begins by taking cladding and screening offcuts from the production process, transforming what would have been discarded material into a valuable resource. These offcuts are carefully trimmed to a uniform 450mm length, ensuring efficient utilisation and reducing unnecessary waste. To achieve the desired width, the short-length pieces undergo an edge-ripping process. This proprietary technique maximises the yield and enhances the shingles’ overall strength and durability. The next step is passing the pieces through a horizontal bandsaw, a crucial part of the process that imparts the bevel profile and bandsawn face that characterise the Vulcan  Shingles’ distinct appearance - along with Abodo’s patented vertical grain structure giving enhanced stability and reduced resin content.  The ventilation cavity installation system developed with the goal of extending the durability of the timber allows the roof and/or wall to breathe, reducing condensation and moisture ingress.

Abodo further enhances the shingles’ longevity with the application of OPX,  a patented colourless water-based timber preservative treatment. Vulcan Shingles provide a unique high-end architectural finish for roof, wall and gable end applications. The beautiful homogenous brown colour will silver off with exposure to weather if left uncoated.

Through the thoughtful use of defective and reworked material,  Abodo prevents waste from being discarded and ending up in landfills. This proactive approach reduces environmental impact and exemplifies the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle at the heart of the circular economy.
