The Wondrous Uplighter was born from a simple but complex need - to bring light into an old shophouse space adapted as a children's activity centre, without glare or clutter, and with a sense of warmth and delight.
The space serves many lives: Lively with early childhood programmes on weekdays, and adult wokshops and seminars on weekends and evenings. While daylight enters through the front windows, illumination drops sharply on overcast days. The design called for a lighting system that could provide both task and ambient lighting, while keeping the space safe, uncluttered, and visually calm.
Downlights were dismissed for their harshness; wall-mounted fittings were avoided to leave the walls free for the display of artworks; and freestanding lamps were ruled out for safety and space reasons. These constraints sparked the idea of a suspended uplighter - one that could softly illuminate the ceiling and reflect light back into the room.
Six fixtures were required for balanced lighting. The designer sought a form that would cast a wide, diffused glow, transforming the ceiling into a luminous canopy without glare. The solution came through an unexpected everyday object: A stainless-steel wok sourced from a nearby Chinatown stall. Suspended in a handwoven cotton net made by one of the grandfathers, the wok cradles a ring of warm LEDs that gently radiate upwards.
The resultant lighting is both soft and sufficient, the ceiling glows gently, and the woven net casts delicate shadows that animate the space. What began as a response to constraints evolved into an inventive fusion of craftsmanship and contemporary design - a modest, resourceful gesture that reflects the community's spirit and the joy of making.
