12x14 House

IZ Architects as Architects

- This house is located in a province in the north central region of Vietnam, where the climate is very hot and humid and there are 2 distinct seasons, hot and cold. Therefore, the requirement before making the design plan is to create a building with high ventilation, shielding the affected areas from storms.

- In addition, with the preference of family members to gather, the design creates a surrounding space to alternate common areas for living, working or reading, combining a central cluster of where all the functions in the house are connected. This area also holds a very important function of solving the core area temperature and light problem. It combines with the ventilation brick array behind the house to create a convection space to help regulate the air throughout the day. In addition, a light-filled skylight is also added to balance the internal microclimate of the house.

- The materials and colors in the house are designed with the condition “balanced” in emotion, and “contrastive” in color". Black Slate stone material and red raw brick create the balance with color complement as well as highlight whereas white color creates the contrast.

- With an area of 12x14m, the space is designed to form a square traffic flow, which helps receive light from skylights. Such square traffic flow combining with the trees planted inside create a cool feeling and a green space throughout the region.

- The use of solutions for trees, ventilation, and 3 light-filled skylights also create positive light effects. When you are inside the house, you can see the sun changing from dawn to sunset. The light from red and yellow in the early morning as well as the strong light at noon creates shadows from the trees and then slowly turns green in the afternoon, which manifests as a philosophy of balance and contrast.
