The original design of 200 Central Park South was completed by Wechsler & Schimenti in 1963 and initially prompted a mix of both criticism and praise from the public and architecture critics. Today, its significance and architectural imprint on the city are undoubtedly recognized by more than just critics and historians. The residential building is located on one of the most famous streets in New York, which, beyond some of the priciest residential real estate in the city, is home to globally recognized landmarks like The Plaza Hotel, Essex House, and The New York Athletic Club.The entrance’s new facade is now equipped with a bronze metal finish with a striking three-dimensional moiré pattern that ties back to the mid-century modern style. ODA’s design intervention includes a new marquee over the driveway, extending from the existing balcony into a circular moon-like-shape, a nod to Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Circular Sun House built in 1958. 

ODA’s lobby designs are rooted in mid-century modern aesthetics that pay homage to the building’s original construction and references the work of famed modernist architects, with one example being Philip Johnson and his glass house. Inspired by nearby Central Park, ODA’s reimagination of the lobby seamlessly blends natural materials, including wood and stone, with organic geometric forms to bring the outdoors in. Intentionally designed to evoke the experience of strolling through the park where you stop and admire sculptures and artwork, ODA has created pockets to display art pieces on their way to the elevators. The gallery-like sensibility is further enhanced by clean lines, a neutral color palette, terrazzo flooring, and a Ketra lighting system. A three-dimensional, geometric design comprising bleached walnut wood and accented with a champagne bronze metal.
