Rockett Studio designed the interiors of 67 Pall Mall Singapore, the first club outside Europe for London's private members' wine club. Perched high above Orchard Road, it occupies the former penthouse residence of the Shaw family, whose extraordinary legacy helped shape Singapore's film industry. Once home to glamorous soirées, the penthouse came with a wealth of stories, and we wanted the design to feel as though the club had always belonged there.
Working from the bare shell of the former office tower, we reimagined the space through its interior architecture, carefully planning the arrangement of members' lounges, bars, private dining rooms, guest amenities and circulation to create a series of interconnected spaces, each with its own identity and atmosphere. The challenge was to transform the penthouse into a fully functioning private members' club while retaining a sense of the building's original grandeur.
The building's heritage became the starting point for the interiors, drawing inspiration from the rich colours and old-school glamour of Chinese and Malay cinema in the 1950s and 60s. Deep, warm tones, richly burled timbers, dramatic marbles and bespoke decorative wallcoverings evoke a sense of history and permanence, while subtle references to Singapore's culture and landscape give the club its own identity. At the heart of the main clubroom, a dramatic seven-metre wine tower, holding 6,800 bottles, rises through the space. Upstairs, the more intimate Whisky Bar, in Runme Shaw's former master bedroom, takes this cinematic palette further.
Wherever possible, we retained and repurposed elements from the original residence. Vintage crystal chandeliers and wall sconces were carefully restored, while photographs, artworks and cinematic memorabilia from the Shaw family's private collection were woven into the design. These details bring an authenticity that couldn't have been achieved through new materials alone. Bespoke furniture, decorative lighting and handcrafted elements bring everything together, creating a club that feels familiar, lived-in and welcoming.
Our intention throughout was to create somewhere with a sense of belonging, where the building's history remains part of the experience and the interiors feel as though they have evolved naturally over time.
