A wave of light is an innovative lighting system, developed by a design group of students within the Association Acropoli.
The project area is located in the green Piana Rotaliana in the province of Trento, near the river Adige: the territory is therefore subject to environmental and landscape protection. The goal of the project is to guarantee the visibility of the edge of the bike path during the night and to guide safely the cyclist during his trip to the Bicigrill BikeBreak Faedo.
The idea is to take distance from the traditional electrical system and to enlighten the path using a photoluminescent paint, which represents a cheap light source with low environmental impact. The paint contains particles able to get charged during the day and to release light for an 8 hour period after the sunset.
The concept is developed through the use of wooden stakes with square cross-section, which are positioned along the path way rotated 45 degrees in relation to the path itself. The morphology of the system takes on the form of a wave: in fact, the stakes have variable height and are positioned with a constant distance from one another. In this way, the cyclist does not perceive any visual barrier and the design system finds itself in perfect harmony with the natural surrounding context.
In addition to lighting, the system represents a territorial branding instrument. The wooden stake structure is integrated with Plexiglas sheets containing different messages: they aim at transmitting information about the path way and at promoting the activities and strengths of the surrounding territory. Therefore, the wooden stakes also function as advertising devices, allowing the involvement of a number of local commercial operators and institutions in the project. Furthermore, the 45 degrees orientation allows to perceive a different graphic message depending on the travelling direction.
The graphic message can also be read in negative: the light of the photoluminescent paint let a new image emerge through the plexiglass transparency.
Besides, the system is integrated with a graphic message positioned on the paving of the bike path which is also realized with photoluminescent paint and defines the edges of the way.
