Nestled within a serene wooded landscape, the 1,800-square-foot Acorn Glade Passive House exemplifies TBDA’s approach to modern sustainable design. The home is thoughtfully crafted to harmonize with its surroundings, blending innovative energy efficiency with biophilic design principles that foster a deep connection to the natural world.
Central to the home’s design is a large south-facing opening that faces a courtyard-like patio, serving as a focal point for the interior. As part of the passive design strategy, this window area, in conjunction with high levels of insulation, satisfies most of the home’s heating needs in the winter. The interior backdrop to this opening is a striking wall made of walnut harvested from the very trees on the property, creating a unique and meaningful connection to the site.
The inspiration for Acorn Glade’s exterior cladding concept comes from the acorn; like the hard gray cap of the acorn, corrugated metal is the default cladding, with visually softer siding creating an inviting texture and color at entry points. The engineered wood siding was pre-finished with a three-color scheme, which TBDA developed through color analysis of winter hues of native grasses, further rooting the home in its natural environment. Inside, the home is a sanctuary of biophilic design, with natural materials and thoughtful spatial organization that foster a connection to nature both indoors and out. Wood banding matching the cabinetry finish is used as an organic three-dimensional lattice to create rhythms and connections across rooms, resulting in a sense of Complex Order that unifies the flow of the interior. The living room is designed as a spatial refuge, offering tranquility and comfort while providing intimate views to the wooded surroundings. Screened porches on two levels allow the enjoyment of the outdoors through dining, gathering, meditation, and sleeping.
As a Phius Source Zero Certified passive house, Acorn Glade is designed to use just a tenth of the heating energy required by a standard code-compliant home, with a 100% reduction in overall household energy use. This remarkable energy efficiency is paired with a commitment to occupant health and well-being. Acorn Glade prioritizes indoor air quality by utilizing no-added-formaldehyde panel materials, no-VOC, non-toxic paints, and Greenguard-certified sealants, caulks, and adhesives. A continuous demand-controlled ventilation system ensures that fresh air is constantly filtered and circulated throughout the home, creating a healthy and comfortable living environment.
