The building at Bolshoi Afanasievsky lane is tenement house built in 1914. In Soviet times, all the residential areas of the house were replanned and reconfigured and often each room of the apartment would be converted into a one-bedroom flat. The idea of the reconstruction project was to bring back the original spatial proportions while retaining all the facilities of a one-bedroom apartment.
The wall separating the kitchen and the bedroom was removed turning the once divided space into a light and spacious studio with two big windows. The bathroom is hidden in a ‘cabinet’ with sliding room that looks like a piece of furniture rather than a separate room. These manipulations allowed to save all the functionality and zoning of a one-bedroom apartments, while maintaining the spatial proportions of the spacious room.
